Join a list / Leave a list
Overview
These two extensions tag and untag the caller as the call passes through them. Join a list adds the caller to a label; Leave a list takes them off it. Neither one asks the caller anything: they run, optionally play a short confirmation, and the call carries on.
Use them to let callers sign themselves up. Key 4 on your menu joins the "Daily shiur" list, key 5 leaves it, and your broadcast audience keeps itself up to date without you touching a contact card.
In the sidebar they are Advanced → Add to Label and Advanced → Remove from Label. Everywhere a destination is picked, and on My Hotline, they are called Join a list and Leave a list.
How It Works
- The caller reaches the extension.
- We work out who they are: the contact they identified as at an access check if there was one, otherwise the contact whose phone number matches their caller ID.
- The label is added or removed.
- Your confirmation recording plays, if you set one.
- The call continues to the next destination.
Nothing is announced unless you record something, and the caller is never asked to confirm. If the step cannot run, the call still carries on.
Join a list (Add to Label)
Basic Information
- Name (required) — For your reference.
- Phone System Reference → Extension ID — Only shown when your account has phone-system references turned on.
Label
- Label (required) — The label the caller is added to. Searchable.
- Create a contact if the caller is not in the address book — On by default. An unknown caller is saved as a new contact so the label always has someone to attach to. The new contact is created with the caller's phone number as their name, and that number saved on the card, so you can rename them later. Turn this off and unknown callers are simply skipped.
- Confirmation Audio (optional) — Played to the caller after they are added, before the call continues. Something like "you have been added to the daily list".
After This
- Next destination — Where the caller goes once they have been added.
Adding someone who is already on the label does nothing and causes no error, so a caller pressing the key twice is harmless.
Leave a list (Remove from Label)
The mirror image, with the same fields minus the create-a-contact toggle.
- Name (required)
- Label (required) — The label the caller is removed from.
- Confirmation Audio (optional) — Played after they are removed, before the call continues.
- After This → Next destination
An unknown caller has nothing to remove, so nothing happens and the call continues.
Routing
| Route | When it fires |
|---|---|
| Then continue to (on the form: Next destination) | Always, once the label has been added or removed |
This is the only route either extension has. If you leave it empty, the confirmation audio plays and the call ends, so it is nearly always worth pointing back at the menu the caller came from.
On My Hotline the destination is shown right at the front of the ⚙ settings, because it is the whole point of the key.
Common Patterns
Self-service sign-up
On your main menu:
- Key
4→ Join a list → "Daily shiur" → Next destination: back to the main menu - Key
5→ Leave a list → "Daily shiur" → Next destination: back to the main menu
Record a confirmation on each so callers know it worked, and say in the menu recording what each key does.
Members-only area, run by the callers themselves
Point an access check at a label, and put a Join a list step behind whatever process qualifies someone, such as passing an exam or making a payment. Passing the exam adds them to the label; the label opens the door from then on.
Do not call
Have key 9 on a broadcast recording point at Join a list → "Do not call". Then set that label as the Do-Not-Call audience on your broadcasts, and people who opt out stay out.
Tips
- Put an access check in front when it matters. Without one, callers are matched by caller ID alone, so a family phone signs up whoever is holding it. With one, the caller who identified themselves is the one who gets tagged, whatever number they dialed from.
- Leave "create a contact" on for sign-up keys, or callers you do not already know quietly fail to join.
- Keep the confirmation short. One sentence. The call is meant to continue.
- One extension per label. Name them after what the caller is doing, e.g. "Join daily shiur", so the destination picker reads clearly.
